Change Across Borders
Begining in the fall, our program offers participants with an opportunity to travel to Punjab, the heartland of the Sikhs, and apply their skills as a community volunteer in one of our community development initiatives while learning about the culture, history and worldview of the people they engage with.
Participants also have an opportunity to learn more about themselves, develop and hone a diverse set of skills, and build lasting relationships with other likeminded individuals from around the globe with whom, we hope, they will continue to work with on community related initiatives long after they have departed from CABS.
Participants apply for predefined community work experience, articulated by FATEH through the Internet & Public Presentations. Selected volunteers are primarily utilized by CABS to assist in implementing, marketing & sustaining (through identification & training of local human resources ) small scale community development projects related to FATEH's mandate, during their duration in Punjab. Participants will also have the opportunity to utilize their personal time to engage in learning, take on a creative pursuit or challenge themselves physically in order to explore their personal potential through a selection of extra circular courses for personal development.
Our current CABS initiatives are predominantly related to building educational capacity, addressing gender & development issues and initiating health or enterprise development programs through our local partner NGOs and affiliates. Where an individual is placed depends primarily on their personal skill sets and interest.

STEMMING FEMALE FOETICIDE/INFANTICIDE
Project Lead | Karamjit Kaur
BACKGROUND
Based on statistics from the Census Bureau of India, we estimate that in Punjab alone, approximately 5 million girls are missing due to the practice of female foeticide. This number continues to increase rapidly. The statistics from the 2001 Census are alarming. In 1991, Punjab had 875 girls for every 1,000 boys. In 2001, there were only 798 girls for every 1,000 boys. What will it be in 2011 if the practice of female foeticide continues at this rate? Equally surprising are statistics that reveal the practice of female foeticide among first generation Punjabi immigrants to Canada, US and the UK. it is patently clear the immigrant Punjabis bring the disease of female foeticide with them from Punjab.
The practice of foeticide/infanticide is not an isolated problem but rather a symptom of a much larger one: the problem of communities devaluing women. Attitudes towards women that are rooted deep in the culture and history contribute to problems such as female foeticide and domestic violence.
